Palermo

This week our mission was blessed with a visit from President Kearon. On Tuesday, we went to Palermo first. I apologize for our lack of a group picture for the moms and dads. I tried to take a picture of as many of our missionaries as I could. It was a spiritual feast, and I think we all left with a new energy and enthusiasm for what we do. It was a beautiful day in Palermo!

Sardegna!

This week, the Rome West had stake conference. They broadcast the meetings from Sassari. We took an extra day so we could work with our missionaries. Our first stop was Olbia. We took pictures with our great elders in front of the church and in front of their apartment.

We went to Sassari and spent the morning with our missionaries there. I went street contacting with the sisters, and President went out with the anziani. Afterwards, we met together and ate lunch.

That evening, we attended the Saturday evening adult session and then ate dinner at the home of the branch president. The next morning, we attended the Sunday session. President spoke at both sessions. I bore my testimony Saturday evening and spoke on Sunday. The members from Cagliari came to Sassari for the conference, so President had a great time seeing old friends. The conference was broadcast to the rest of the stake. We love our members and our missionaries!

Couples

We are truly blessed in our mission with wonderful senior couples. This week, we had an incredible new couple arrive in Rome. They both served here in Italy when they were young, and they completed a mission in Milano just a short time ago. Their son lives in the Katy Stake, but they raised the children in the same stake where our son J now lives. They have been assigned to Pozzuoli, where I know they will be a great blessing.

After we said hello to this great couple, we had to say goodbye to another amazing couple who have served faithfully and are returning home. We will miss you!

We started the week going to the Questura to get fingerprinted so that we can have legal residence status here in Italy. We got in and out in record time--one hour total. We truly felt blessed!

We went to church in Rome 5 on Sunday. It is a wonderful, strong ward with many great families. We were blessed to see a family I knew in Rome so many years ago. I will try to get a photo of them for returned missionaries later this week. We also met a family where the father had been confirmed by our new senior elder when he was on his first mission. Then we met the son of the former area seventy from Italy who was called as a seventy the same day as the President. We took the time to take a quick photo with our Sisters.

Last week, I rushed so fast to get a blog entry because my computer finally worked that I missed adding this photo of our wonderful elders of Malta. We love them!

computer

Some of you may have wondered if we are still here in Italy since I haven't posted this week. The reality is that my computer has given me problems since we got here, and yesterday I had to have the motherboard replaced. I haven't had access to my computer for a couple of weeks. I hope having my computer fixed will get me caught up with some of the tasks that have suffered during this time. I don't know how I made it without a computer in the past!

On Wednesday, we woke up at 3:30 am because our bed was shaking. Within minutes, one of our elders called. The elders were fine, but given Italy's history with earthquakes, it was a bit frightening. The second big tremor came an hour later. We were able to quickly figure out that our missionaries were fine, except for one apartment where they were still sleeping and we were unable to contact them until it was a little later. We are saddened by the loss of life here in Italy, but are deeply grateful for the protection of our missionaries and members.

A week and a half ago, President and I had the pleasure of attending church in a different part of Rome. We later visited the home of the bishop. Here are our missionaries and the bishop and his wife.

This last weekend, we traveled to Malta, where we spoke for the branch conference, and where we met with our missionaries and members. President was able to do temple recommend interviews. In Malta, they speak English and Maltese. It was very beautiful, and I can see why people come here to vacation. It was a little different from Italy--one of the elders said he felt like he was in Jerusalem. We were able to visit with two different families in their homes. One family was Maltese, the other was British. We loved trying to understand the cultures and food of each family. The gospel truly makes the world small.

Finally, a real treat this week happened when President was over at the stake center when he ran into the son of my dear mission companion from Modena. He brought him over to the villa for a few minutes, and I was able to show him where his mother and I met for district meeting years ago. I was also able to tell him what a great missionary his mother was. I am glad he came to Rome!

Temple Visit

This week, we went over to the temple site and took some pictures through the fence where they have opened up a small window. We love this building and look forward to the day when it will bless the lives of the Saints here in Italy.
